THE Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has arrested
a suspect (names withheld) with fake documents for smuggled vehicles.
This was disclosed by the Customs Area Controller in charge of the area command, Mr Richard Oteri, during a press briefing at Customs premises, at Ikolaba area of Ibadan, on Thursday.
Saying he believed that investigation into fake documents would help in bursting the syndicate which specialised in forging Customs documents, Oteri emphasised that it would also help in reducing the incidence of smuggling imported vehicles.
He noted his area command’s progress in ensuring payment of duty on imported vehicles, saying that between January and August, duty amounting to N113,545,720million was paid on 1,121 vehicles as against N51,592,894 paid on 749 vehicles.
The Area Controller further disclosed that his men recently intercepted a truck with 40 feet container loaded with 585 bags of 50kg rice which were concealed with bags of charcoal. In addition, a refrigerated truck loaded 300 bags of rice and 46 fairly-used smuggled vehicles were also impounded.
