SPEAKER of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has called on political office holders to lay more emphasis on the electorates than hinging all their actions on political party that brought them into power.
Tambuwal, who spoke Saturday in Benin City, Edo State, at the birthday and silver jubilee wedding anniversary of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr. Pius Odubu, said, the lower house was interested in serving the interest of Nigerians that elected them rather than carrying out dictates of their various political parties even when they were not in the best interest of Nigerian.
According to him, “what concerns us as a House is the Federal Republic of Nigeria because we represents constituencies that are delineated based on the population of the Nigerian people. And the moment you are elected a member, you are expected to serve and represent that particular constituency irrespective of which platform of the party you have contested the election and won. Therefore, whatever we do in the House, we consider the federation of Nigeria as a basis of our decision.”
On the controversy that has dogged the 2013 Appropriation Bill, Tambuwal had told media men at the Benin Airport on arrival that “we are still consulting, it is all about consultation and we will keep on talking to ourselves and ensure that Nigerian s get the best out of it but I assure you that what the National Assembly is doing is to ensure that Nigerians get the best out of every situation. We are not there to undermine the interest of Nigerians; we will be the last people to do that.”
While expressing his gratitude to the Speaker and other dignitaries that attended the ceremony including PDP members in the state led by the former Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Imasuen, Odubu pointed out that despite the political affiliations, “we are all brothers. And I want to urge my friends and brothers in the PDP to support this administration because the Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole has done well for Edo State.”
Other dignitaries at the ceremony include Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Prince Ehenede Erediauwa, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe; Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri; National Assembly members, PDP leaders from the state, wives of Deputy Governors of Enugu and Delta states and a host of other high networth guests.
